
Getting the Heat Right: Why Your Brake Pad Material Matters
Here’s the thing about brake pads: they aren’t all made the same. A ceramic pad and a semi-metallic pad react to heat in completely different ways. If you try to use a generic IR lamp for both, you’re asking for trouble. You’ll either end up with a core that isn’t cured at all, or you’ll scorched the surface. It’s a frustrating gamble. That’s why we build our heaters to match the specific “flavor” of the friction material you’re actually using.
The Trick to Getting Heat Deep Inside
Ceramic compounds are picky. They need a specific wavelength to let the heat sink in without glazing the surface. Semi-metallic pads are different—those metal fibers move heat fast, but they can actually bounce certain IR bands right back. We solve this by tuning the emitter. We shift between shortwave and medium-wave IR so the heat actually penetrates the material. It stops that annoying “skin effect” where the outside looks perfect, but the center is still raw.
Handling the Heavy Lifting
When you’re dealing with high-density materials, you need raw power. We use high-wattage quartz emitters because you need that temperature to spike fast. If the heat takes too long to ramp up, your production line crawls. To keep things efficient, we can spec these for high-voltage setups so you aren’t pulling massive current across your oven banks. But you have to be careful with the “footprint.” These lamps pack a huge amount of energy into a tiny space. If your conveyor slows down or the lamps are sitting too close, you’ll get hotspots. It’s easy to overdo it. To keep things safe, we usually suggest a closed-loop pyrometer system. It basically watches the heat in real-time and dials the power up or down so you don’t fry your product.
Making it Work in the Real World
We can give you drop-in replacements for your current housings, but keep in mind that changing the wavelength usually means tweaking your power supply. Shortwave lamps hit hard and fast. They’re great for slashing your cycle times. But there’s a catch: they’re sensitive. If your pads aren’t sitting perfectly flush on the belt, you’ll get uneven curing. It’s all a balancing act. We’ll work with you to find that sweet spot between distance and wattage, making sure you get the speed you want without sacrificing the quality of the cure.
